Importers also failed to pay the needed excise on beer Romanian press agency Rompres reported as quoted by Dnevnik daily. The result was a 12 per cent decrease of beer sales realised by small Romanian brewers in the first half of 2007. According to Romanian tax administration (ANAF) small brewers lost a total of 60 000 hectolitres of beer and the state lost 40 million leus (nearly 24 million leva). ANAF investigation showed that beer importers did not have the Romanian financial ministry’s approval to import Bulgarian beer. The problem came from the fact that Bulgarian beer has been sold at too low of prices which led to decreased sales of local production for the first half of 2007. The main Bulgarian beer exporters to Romania are Bolyarka Lomsko Pivo Ledenika and MM. Bulgarian brewers said that Romanian brewers’ reactions were normal since Bulgarian beer was of European quality and among the least expensive in the world after China.
