The advert for Miller Genuine Draft featured a man on skates somersaulting over dogs and jumping through a tyre. The Advertising Standards Authority said the “effortless cool” of the skater’s tricks could appeal to minors and that the ad should not be repeated. The beer firm said the man was trying to avoid traffic not look cool. The ASA’s initial investigation – the result of a single consumer complaint about the promotion’s content – was not upheld.

Jackson who had Parkinson’s disease died on Aug. 30 at the age of 65. He was a journalist by trade but his appreciation of good beer and of disappearing traditional styles compelled him to research and write “The World Guide to Beer” first published in 1977. He traveled the globe tirelessly researching and updating the “World Guide” making a TV special called “The Beer Hunter” and writing many other books about whiskey and beer. ne of his best known “The Great Beers of Belgium” put that country’s traditional brews on the map. The Englishman considered beer as complex and as deserving of respect as wine; his enthusiasm and appreciation of styles old and new endeared him to brewers around the world. Jackson didn’t come to Boston often but local brewers who met him remember him fondly.

A new study by the bureau assesses the cost ofthe time police spend dealing with alcohol-related crime. It is notjust an urban problem. While more police hours are spent overalldealing with booze-fuelled lawlessness in the city the smallernumbers of police in country areas spend a larger proportion oftheir time on crime of this type (15 per cent compared with 7 percent in the inner metropolitan area). Attending alcohol-fuelledassaults took up the most time followed by random breath testingand follow-up paperwork.
