Small Beer for Czech Bud Lovers
TIME – Sep 26, 2007
artTools –>Those were eight tough years when Vaclav Moravec had no choice but to live in the Czech city of Pilsen the cradle of the famed pilsner beer. That’s because for more than 40 years the 65-year-old retired engineer has been a daily patron of Budweiser — not that pale thirst-quencher produced by Anheuser-Busch but the hearty bitter lager from the small Budejovicky Budvar brewery in the South Bohemian town of Ceske Budejovice. The town’s German name Budweis gave both beers their name — and cause for their nearly century-long trademark war in courts worldwide. “Every time I arrived in Budejovice I first hurried to a pub” Moravec says as he recalls his grim years in Pilsen. tiiQuigoWriteAd(755777 1391588 142 225 -1); Now Moravec faces a new ordeal: Recent Czech press reports allege that Anheuser-Busch had been in talks with a close though unofficial adviser to the Czech Prime Minister about buying the last major post-communist brewery still in state hands — which also happened to be the Czech namesake of its flagship brand.
Small beer makers hopping mad
Toronto Star – Sep 26, 2007
Dana Flavelle Staff Reporter ntario’s smallest beer makers say it’s time to bust up what they call The Beer Store monopoly and give the little guy a chance. While they stop short of calling for beer in corner stores the ntario Craft Brewers say they want consumers and brewers to have more choice and more places to shop. "ntario Craft Brewers strongly believe that ntario beer consumers are not well served by the restriction of the Beer Store ownership to only three competitors" president John Hay said today. They say The Beer Store is a foreign-owned government-sanctioned monopoly that serves mainly the interests of the three big multinational brewers who control it through their ownership stakes in Molson Labatt and Sleeman. The network of 440 stores accounts for 85 per cent of all beer sales in the province.

Beer rock in space test
Midweek Herald – Sep 26, 2007
uk26 September 2007 RCK from the cliffs at Beer have been blasted into space as part of an experiment into extreme conditions. The rock samples are part of a European experiment on board the Foton-M3 an unmanned Russian spacecraft which was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakstan last Friday. After nine minutes of propelled flight the Foton reached a low Earth orbit where it will stay for 12 days before the re-entry capsule returns to Earth. Attached to the outside of the spacecraft is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Biopan facility which will be used to expose the rock samples to the environment to study the impact of space’s extreme temperatures ultraviolet cosmic and other solar radiation. The samples of Beer rock are part of an experiment called Lithopanspermia which will be looking at the ability of organisms to survive in interplanetary conditions.
