brewer said Wednesday that a boost in international sales helped push its profit up 11 percent in the third quarter. But with higher grain prices squeezing profit margins the company said it will phase in price hikes to keep profits up into 2008.

Greene King has lodged a planning application to build the plant at its Bury St Edmunds facility. The brewer whose brands include ld Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale said beer unused by pubs within a three-day best before period would be recycled. The beer-based product can be used as animal feed or sprayed onto crops. Local farmsAs well as providing an environmentally-friendly way of using discarded drink the brewer said the project would cut congestion outside its Westgate site.

n Tuesday S&N said that Carlsberg had breached terms of the agreement for the jointly-owned Russian beer business Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH). The move comes after Carlsberg and Heineken said last week that they were considering a joint bid for S&N. S&N said it was now considering whether to take full control of BBH. The Edinburgh-based S&N also said it might seek a new partner for BBH which is seen as one of S&N’s most-prized assets.
