Connoisseurs could be in for a surprise this year and they may not be alone. Small brewers from Australia to the United States face the daunting prospect of tweaking their recipes or experimenting less with new brews because of a worldwide shortage of one key beer ingredient – hops – and rising prices for others. h and one other thing: Beer prices are likely to climb. How high is anybody's guess.

31 (Bloomberg) — Kirin Holdings Co. Japan's biggestbrewer will raise beer prices for the first time in 17 years tocover the higher cost of brewing malt and aluminum cans. Prices will rise for regular low-malt and other beerproducts on Feb. 1 the company said in a statement to the TokyoStock Exchange today without specifying the increase. The price of malt has more than doubled and aluminum hasrisen about 30 percent in the past year according to the Tokyo-based brewer. Kirin follows Japanese noodle bread and mayonnaise makersin announcing price increases after a decade of deflation in theworld's second-biggest economy.

The 30th annual festival held last week has been hailed a great success but there are fears that the event’s days could be numbered. Noise restrictions are already imposed at St Andrew’s and Blackfriars’ halls following complaints about disturbance at the venues by neighbour John Hardman. Now organisers say they are unsettled by rumours about the future of the halls owned and managed by Norwich City Council and are calling for more volunteers to come forward to run the festival. Des ‘Brien chairman of Norwich and Norfolk Campaign for Real Ale said: ?We fully intend to continue with the great tradition of beer festival in St Andrew’s Hall but there are two issues to overcome.
