has inked an alliance with a small brewery in Charlottesville Va. making the country’s biggest beer-maker the master distributor of  Starr Hill Pale Ale Jomo Lager and Dark Starr Stout. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch  has been beating the bushes for new products — even in small batches — that can satisfy adult drinkers looking for specialty products. Increasingly the company is willing to join forces with little breweries.

Sapporo to Raise Beer Prices 3-5% on Ingredient Costs (Update1)

20 (Bloomberg) — Sapporo Holdings Ltd. the Japanbrewer subject to a hostile takeover offer said it willincrease beer prices to cover the rising cost of ingredients. The retail price of Sapporo's beer product line will likelyrise by 3 to 5 percent April 1 as the company passes alongsupplier price increases company spokesman.

These exotic brews we were told had a "smooth taste" (brewer’s code for bland and inoffensive). The main selling point however was their relatively high alcohol content usually around 6 or 7 per cent. "Try this and you’ll get hammered for a relatively cheap price" would have been a more accurate slogan. Comparing those beers to Schneider Aventinus Eisbock ? which arrived in the LCB earlier this month ? would be like comparing the work of a house painter to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Hit by price increases and shortages many breweries particularly the small “craft brewers” and the even smaller microbreweries are being forced to raise prices make do with modified recipes or shut off the spigots altogether. The humble hop the plant that gives beer its distinctive flavour is the main problem. Many farmers in the Pacific north-west where America’s hop production is concentrated have turned to more profitable lines—especially corn which can be made into ethanol. The decrease in hop production put at some 50% over the past decade has sent prices through the roof.
