BBC News – Dec 29, 2007
Dragon Smoke Stout made by the Beowulf Brewing Company in Brownhills Walsall has been awarded a bronze medal by the Campaign for Real Ale. The awards are to be presented at the Barton Arms in Aston Birmingham on Saturday. Brewer Phil Bennett said it was a good area for making beer and believed the water quality in the region could be among the reasons for its success. `Mr Bennett said: “There’s an awful lot of small growers and there’s an awful lot of quality growers around in the whole of the Midlands but in the West Midlands in particular. “Maybe it’s the water that’s very good.

5 | smell: 2 | taste: 2 | feel: 2 | drink: 2rDev: -34. 8%I saw this beer and thought it would be fun to try what with all the non tradintional ingredents in it. The apperance isn’t all that bad. It has a nice big head and a hazy orange hue that may get your hopes up. The rest is down hill.

Whole Foods Market (Vienna)
BeerAdvocate.com – Dec 29, 2007
7%I just recently discovered this Whole Foods location since there are a couple closer to my house. But this one is worth the extra commute. Each Whole Foods location stocks its beer selection separately and this one has a very enthusiastic beer manager. n my several visits he’s always been around to guide me through the selection and make suggestions. Super friendly and helpful. He’s even offered to place special orders if I can’t find something that I want already on the shelves… 9%We stopped in here recently to hit the place up for dinner to go show at Wolftrap and to check out the beer selection. The beer selection is simply outstanding. I think they have just about all of the quality stuff you can expect in NVA. My favorite was seeing and purchasing “local” stuff from Legend and Williamsburg Alewerks. Service was solid with the young man who is the beer manager chewing my ear for a good 15 minutes or more. We had fun playing the have you had this one game?! He was kind enough to clue me in on a few extra Williamsburg Alewerks beers that were hidden.

Spendrups Norrlands Guld Export
BeerAdvocate.com – Dec 29, 2007
9%A can of this beer from Spendrups was purchased at Systembolaget. Systembolaget is the government owned chain of liquor stores scattered throughout Sweden. It has bright yellow color to it with creamy head. It smells yeasty and light. The taste is simple and crisp… Nose was weakly malted. Color was nice golden yellow. This beer has excessive carbonation. This was the one feature that caught my attention about this beer as I have never seen a beer this active before. The taste was dry which I don’t mind. The beer is quite bitter initially but tones down as the glasses’ end nears. Mouth feel is thin and watery.

Dance Hall Patrons Lament Last Call for ‘Polka Time!’
Washington Post – Dec 29, 2007
Will Bid Auf WiedersehenBy Steve HendrixWashington Post Staff WriterSaturday December 29 2007; B01The shoe-slapping dancers in lederhosen and Bavarian skirts weren’t the only ones moving to a different tempo recently at Max Blob’s Park in Jessup. Time itself seemed to tick to another beat in the cavernous polka parlor which has been a weekend hot spot since the end of the Hoover administration. The beer garden between Washington and Baltimore which is closing this month after 74 years still serves schnitzel dumplings and other weighty fare. The beer still sometimes appears in capped steins and lots of the local folk measure their tenures as Blob’s regulars not by the year but by the decade. “I met Steve here 22 years ago and we’ve been dating ever since” Joan Bentley of Laurel said on a recent Friday night standing by the dance floor and nearly shouting over the babble of diners and the wail of the accordion. Someone had just shouted “It’s polka time!” from the bandstand and dancers were rushing by the dozen to the floor. Bentley’s longtime companion Steve Nyschot stood next to her scanning the crowd and tapping his feet… Time itself seemed to tick to another beat in the cavernous polka parlor which has been a weekend hot spot since the end of the Hoover administration.
