n the back of a year plagued with difficulties many in the pub industry believe the going will get tougher in 2008 and the dominant mood remains anything but positive. The past year has been something of a perfect storm for the industry. The introduction of the smoking ban spiralling raw material energy and employment costs terrible summer weather and the continued erosion of the beer market have piled troubles on pubs in the past 12 months. While those threats continue to erode margins the greatest concern for industry executives is the prospect of a slowdown in consumer spending.

The Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Ltd — the nodal agency to canalise liquor in the State sold only 10203 cases of beer as against the average 14000 cases this month. ne case contains approximately nine litres of liquor. This was the lowest sale in December so far already a lean month for beer. A day before that on December 18 the Corporation registered beer sales of 13635 cases.
