And it did through a good part of the third quarter with neither team able to hold a lead of more than five points until the Beer Crew went on an 11-3 run in the closing minutes to open up a 60-52 lead. That was the end for the Leopards against the Beer as the Beast opened the fourth with his eighth three-pointer of the game to give his team a double-digit lead before they blew it wide open to run away with a 14-point win. utstanding shooting by Taiwan Beer from the field hitting nearly 50 percent of their shots against the Leopards’ 2-3 zone defense was the key to success as the men in their familiar green-and-white outfits stretched the zone with crisp passing before finding the open man. A Brewer With Hope in the Hereafter
Washington Post – Jan 15, 2008
The crowd sipping on a copper-colored intensely malty doppelbock that Thompson has dubbed the Gift responds with an enthusiastic "Amen!"The 42-year-old Virginian has lofty ambitions. He learned brewing in the Pacific Northwest and returned to his home town of Charlottesville in 1999 to operate a brew pub that had been founded 12 years earlier by two grandsons of author William Faulkner. He brewed beer for the pub on the premises and he contracted out the kegged and bottled versions of his beers to ld Dominion Brewing in Ashburn. In 2005 he moved all of his brewing operations to a former Swanson frozen food plant in nearby Crozet and last year he shuttered the restaurant to concentrate on beermaking. He says he aims to make Starr Hill a national craft brand like Samuel Adams or Sierra Nevada over the next 10 years. That’s a tall order considering that he brewed 4300 barrels last year — and that his beers are available only in a swath of Virginia. But Thompson will have the help of an influential partner: Anheuser-Busch.
The nitty Gritty about beer
Daily News Tribune – Jan 15, 2008
I still remember my first time. It was July 24 2004 and while enjoying the Best Bitter and splitting an order of chicken fingers with a friend the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees got into a bench-clearing brawl a fight many believe sparked the Sox to their first World Series win in 86 years. I haven’t been back there since that day but luckily I can still relive that memorable day in my mind when I have a bottle of Best Bitter or any other of their English-style ales that are widely available locally. Gritty’s beers are sometimes overlooked amid the hype that surrounds the latest 10 percent alcohol by volume extreme beers that seem to hit shelves every day.

Louis Post-Dispatch Port and Stilton. Champagne and strawberries. Porter and biscotti?Just when you might have thought you were getting a handle on the whole wine-and-food pairing thing along comes Anheuser-Busch putting its considerable promotional prowess behind the pairing of foods with beer. Late last year it even published a cookbook: “Great Food Great Beer” (Sunset $24. 95; paperback) a compendium of 185 recipes some to pair with beers and some that also include beer in their ingredients. The idea certainly isn’t new. Anheuser-Busch has archives of sales material dating to the turn of the 20th century advocating beer and food pairings.
Chapel Hill bans brown bagging; no action on beer
Shelbyville Times-Gazette – Jan 15, 2008
The brown bag ban was predictable given a Dec. 10 vote against self-serve drinks and wine but comments at the board meeting Monday indicate beer service won’t be allowed either because restaurants are so close to schools day cares and churches.
Beer prices impacted by worldwide hops shortage
dailytarheel.com – Jan 15, 2008
A worldwide hops shortage and malting barley price increases have forced one of Chapel Hill’s renowned breweries to raise its prices. During the past year hops prices increased an eye-popping 300 percent from $5 per pound to $20. Combined with a 30 percent price increase for malting barley Carolina Brewery had to up the cost of a pint by 25 cents to break even. “Increasing the price is the last thing we wanted to do” said Jon Connolly director of brewery operations at Carolina Brewery.
