Sapporo rejects takeover bid from Steel Partners
International Herald Tribune – Feb 26, 2008
An acquisition for $1. 43 billion by Steel Partners Japan Strategic Fund (ffshore) might “seriously harm” shareholder interests Sapporo said Tuesday in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The rejection leaves Steel Partners with the option of making a hostile bid for the Tokyo-based brewer whose real estate is worth more than twice as much as its beer business. Steel Partners which has made a series of failed takeover bids in Japan since 2003 has urged Sapporo to increase returns by redeveloping property reviewing its soft-drink unit and improving the marketing of its beers… 19 billion it generated from its Japanese alcohol business. Like larger rival brewers Kirin Holdings and Asahi Breweries Sapporo is raising prices this year for the first time in 18 years on higher costs for brewing malt aluminum cans and other raw materials. Sapporo the brewer of Yebisu premium beer is also battling to maintain sales as beer consumption falls in Japan. Domestic beer shipments fell 0. 3 percent to 496 million cases last year a record low as the nation's population aged and younger consumers switched to wine and other beverages. Sapporo's Japanese alcohol sales fell 1. 6 percent to ¥316 billion last year.
