SD brews’ renown overflows
San Diego Union Tribune – Apr 16, 2008
”Drinan is among the fortunate few. This nation lags behind Europe in promoting beer and breweries as vacation highlights. The United States offers nothing to match Munich's ktoberfest or the 24 Hours of Belgian Beer a festival near Antwerp. Rating county brews San Diego County beers are world-class. TVTM: From France with love; beer talk; slogans tons of e-mails and…
San Francisco Chronicle – Apr 16, 2008
tmpl –>TVTM: From France with love; beer talk; slogans tons of e-mails and MILFs too. We’ve got a two-part TV Talk Machine podcast this week and I would have had the first part up earlier but as it turned out the Diamondbacks were in town having a day-game tilt with my beloved G-Men and well you can probably guess what happened. We decided to get right into this one (or “right into this one” in theory because we’re incapable of actually moving forward in a brisk informative manner) because a listener in France asked us to read his e-mail in the first five minutes and we do pretty much whatever our international callers ask (especially after we learned later that our international toll free number isn’t actually free for international callers). Also the TVTM takes a few minutes to honor Tom Snyder (one of our rare turns of seriousness) and we plow through a ton of letters try out some slogans (“the podcast of doom”) find a theremin sound discuss both CBS comedies and MILFs which doesn’t seem plausible; we also sing the praises of “Flight of the Conchords” and some of “Business Time” as well; restate our lust and desire for Jenny Lewis; and dispute an e-mail that claims our Bill Walton impression sounds more like Patrick from “Sponge Bob”; ultimately we ask “Where’s the love?” Don’t worry it all makes sense (actually no it doesn’t). You can call us at our not quite international hotline: 1-888-SFC-TVTM.

Chapel Hill beer service may be one vote away
Shelbyville Times-Gazette – Apr 16, 2008
“We have been on this before and we took no action” Mayor Carl Cooper said during the town board’s regular monthly meeting this week when he recalled a motion in January that failed to get a second so it failed leaving the town without a decision. Alderman Horace Hill made the motion on Monday to permit beer service. “It’s going to happen one of these days anyway” Hill said as Alderwoman Kim Holton started asking questions. “If this passes am I right that it would have to come up on their own?”City Attorney Todd Moore explained that restaurant owners would have to specifically request an on-premises permit to sell beer to customers — but if an applicant meets the standards to have a permit then the town’s beer board would be obliged to issue a permit.

Alibi RoomFirst stop: the Alibi Room on the edge of Vancouver’s heritage Gastown district. As I sip a smooth Back Hand of God stout from Crannog Ales — a celebrated organic producer from a 10-acre farm in Sorrento — I’m surprised at how much lighter it is than Guinness with a distinctive but not overpowering coffeelike finish. “It’s probably our most popular beer” says Alibi co-owner and chief booze selector Nigel Springthorpe. Transforming his 10-year-old wood-floored bar from its original cocktail lounge approach he has wooed regional brewers into supplying him with Vancouver’s biggest B. Among the 14 taps lining his bar are lip-smacking concoctions from Chilliwack’s ld Yale Brewing Squamish’s Howe Sound Brewing and Surrey’s Russell Brewing… Among the 14 taps lining his bar are lip-smacking concoctions from Chilliwack’s ld Yale Brewing Squamish’s Howe Sound Brewing and Surrey’s Russell Brewing. There’s even room for Swans and Spinnakers a couple of Victoria producers that aren’t served by anyone else in Vancouver. For beer drinkers it’s a chance to taste-trip around British Columbia without leaving town especially since the Alibi’s small tasting glasses cost just $3 (Canadian) each. “People come in for something simple but by the end of the night they’re happily trying Surly Blonde or Irish Red Ale for the first time” Springthorpe says. Tempted to spend the afternoon slowly sliding under the table I instead knock back a fruity Salt Spring Golden Ale then head out. Steamworks Brewing Co. Strolling along nearby Water Street I soon reach the landmark Steamworks Brewing Co.
