And there is a good reason for this because many of the so-called Portuguese dishes that we enjoy originated in the Portuguese colonies in Africa not in Portugal itself. Although there is a spicy influence on Portugal’s food from Spain and Northern Africa it was down in the colonies where the hot chilli and the rest became part of what we know locally as ‘Portuguese’ food. I recently spent some time in Mozambique again and came across a number of lovely new dishes (such as today’s beer and chilli prawns) and also rejuvenated my love for the superb crab curries they make on the islands off the Mozambique coast. And it reminded me that in the heat of Africa (and with the spicy foods that I love so much) the best drinks to have is a couple of ice cold beers so make sure you have enough in supply when you serve these deliciously spicy prawns.
