Report: Japanese Brewery to Launch ‘Space Beer’ Come November

According to Agence France-Presse Japanese brewer Sapporo Holdings said Tuesday it’s working on the first “space beer” using the third-generation descendants of barley grown on the International Space Station. Researchers said the beer project is one of many efforts to prepare for a future where people spend lengthy periods of time in space. Sapporo’s partner in the project biologist Manabu Sugimoto said they hope their research will someday be “not just about producing food but about enjoying food and relaxing. The company reportedly hopes to launch the new beer by November and has enough space grain for about 100 bottles. Still Sapporo officials said there are no immediate plans to make it available to the general public.
Craft breweries turn Longmont into a beer town

byline –> Wednesday May 28 2008 This town of 82000 is known as the home of high-tech heavyweights such as data-storage company Seagate Technology and biotech giant Amgen. But another industry has taken root here and is undergoing a major growth spurt: brewing. Today Longmont is home to two significant craft breweries: Left Hand Brewing founded here in 1993 and undergoing an expansion that will about double its brewing capacity; and skar Blues Brewery which opened a new brewery here in April after outgrowing its original facilities in nearby Lyons. A brewpub the Pumphouse Brewery also calls Longmont home. While not boasting the number of craft breweries as say Denver Fort Collins Boulder or Durango Longmont is emerging as more of a beer town.

Beer to celebrate crime-fighting

Castle Rock Brewery is making the beer for the occasion and it will be unveiled in Nottingham on Thursday at a special ceremony. A percentage of the sales will go to Crimestoppers. Kate Davies strategic director of Notts County Drug and Alcohol Action Team said “a more appropriate approach” could have been used to celebrate. “There are more appropriate approaches that could have been used to emphasise the Crimestoppers campaign and get the message across” she said.

Head brewer Rod Williams said the beer dubbed the Chocolate Winter Warmer will flow from the tap like cream and resemble a milkshake with a dark brown hue and a 5 per cent alcohol content. The beer served a couple of degrees warmer than the average beer will be the first of Coldstream Brewery’s seasonal beers. Share this article.
