In what is sure to be a major morale boost Gen. Raymond dierno the top U. commander in Iraq issued a waiver Wednesday to a strict military ban on drinking alcohol in combat zones.

According to the Hisbah Board Commandant General Sheikh Ibrahim Mu’azam Mai Bushira the destruction of the beer was part of the attempt of the Hisbah command to sanitise the state from alcohol consumption which is contrary to the principles of Shari’ah legal system. Sheikh Mai Bushira said: “We thank Allah for this day because some people thought what we are doing now is something that is not achievable in Kano State. Kano State government has declared the state as Shari’ah compliant and therefore alcohol consumption which beer is one is prohibited.

Casey Cagle has been viewed as one of those standing in the way of legislation that would allow Sunday beer and wine sales at grocery and liquor stores. Cagle denies any opposition to the measure but he has tremendous influence over what the Senate considers and the Sunday sales bill has never made it to the Senate floor for a vote. Proponents of Sunday sales say they’ll try again this year — and earlier this week Cagle promised neutrality on the matter. Now Cagle is running for governor.
