“We strongly urge legislators to reject this proposal when it comes to a vote before the Assembly and Senate. Legislative leaders agreed in a three-way budget proposal unveiled today to keep wine out of New York grocery stores. But they approved an excise tax hike on beer — albeit a smaller one than originally proposed. The beer tax now will rise from 11 cents per gallon to 14 cents per gallon. David Paterson had proposed increasing it to 24 cents per gallon. “I would have preferred to see nothing but it is substantially lower” said Assemblyman Will Barclay R-Pulaski.

Stewart Greenleaf has lived the saying – and then some. For the 17th straight year the District 12 Republican has sponsored legislation to register beer kegs hoping to place another barrier in the way of underage alcohol consumption. Greenleaf’s bill would require each purchaser to complete a numbered form listing his or her name and address. The beer distributor would attach an identification tag to the keg that corresponds to the numbered form. "Kegs hold a large amount of alcohol and are relatively inexpensive" Greenleaf said. "Young people often try to get a hold of them and they do so by getting someone above the age of 21 to buy it for them.
